IHSS determines the client's eligibility, then, an IHSS social worker makes a home visit to assess the services and the number of hours of care the client needs. Services are based on the client's medical condition or disability, plus his or her level of ability. Anyone who recognizes that a person is in need of in-home assistance may make a referral to IHSS. Once the requirements for the Health Care Certification and Medi-Cal eligibility are met a social worker is assigned to the case to conduct an assessment of need.
